Prof. Arno Barnard
Professor of Electrical Engineering
Arno Barnard is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University. His academic career at the institution began in 2001 as a Junior Lecturer, followed by a tenure as an Engineering Manager in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ESL) from 2003 to 2009. He returned to full-time lecturing at Stellenbosch in 2010.He holds a B.Eng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (1999) and an M.Sc.Eng in Computer Systems (2001), and a PhD (2020) from Stellenbosch University. His research focuses on embedded computer and satellite systems, specifically small-satellite computing, radiation effects testing on space electronics, and FPGA-based design.Since 1999, he has contributed to South African satellite projects and autonomous vehicle research, including the SUNSAT, Sumbandila Satellite, Tshepisosat, and ZA-Aerosat. He serves as the primary point of contact for the UNISEC Southern Africa Region and has supervised many M.Eng and PhD students in the satellite technology field.
