Dr. Marais is a pioneering theoretical physicist whose research explores quantum effects in biology and the cosmic origins of life’s building blocks. As Director at the Foundation for Space Development Africa and Head of Science for the Africa2Moon mission, she is a leader in Africa’s first space exploration mission, set to launch with China’s Chang’e-8 mission, and enabling groundbreaking science that cannot be done from Earth.
In 2019, Dr. Marais founded Proudly Human, where she now leads the Off-World Project, a series of extreme environment habitation experiments preparing for life on the Moon, Mars, and beyond, as well as a resilient future here on Earth.
She has also held roles as researcher at University of Stellenbosch and the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences, expert at Singularity University, and committee member for GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator.
